French Festival at Hillwood Museum in July

The French festival at Hillwood Museum will be held on Saturday July 10th, 10am-7pm & Sunday July 11th, 1-5pm.
Be taken back 300 years to a time when ladies curtsied, men bowed, and courtship came alive in outdoor garden settings. Courtly, country dances were in style and "silent languages" abounded between friends and flirtatious lovers with a mere flick of a fan or handkerchief. Children and adults alike cannot help but enjoy the lively theatrics presented by the New York Baroque Dance Company and Concert Royal as they engage guests in music, dance, and fanciful history. Other activities include:
  • Gallery talks about the French collection
  • "Kings, Queens, & Soup Tureens" audio tour
  • Garden talks in the French Parterre
  • Traditional games, including jacks and a hooptossing game called The Game of Graces.
  • Art Project–decorate your own miniature French furniture.
$18 Public, $12 Hillwood and Alliance Francaise Members, $7 College Students, $5 Children 6-18. No program fee is required for children under 6.

CIWILE Children's Book

CIWILE is a local service (based in Bethesda, Maryland) of mothers that sale French books. They have over 500 titles from editors like Hachette, Albin Michel, Flammarion, Rageot, Ecole des Loisirs, etc.  I recently purchased a couple of books and had a good experience. I was able to meet with one of the moms and flip through some books before purchasing them.  Shipping is free for purchases of $30 or more.  Prices are quite reasonable.

How does it work?
  • Select books from our Wish List
  • Email your orders to ciwile@hotmail.com or call 240 678 2393
  • Pay by check after the order is confirmed

Great Place to order French children's books!

If you are looking to order some French children books, I highly recommend French Books Online.  They have fabulous customer service and the books are shipped and received on time.  I have had 2 successful orders.  Shipping is free if you order more than 2 books and they always send you a coupon for your next purchase.  I personally think their prices are fair (if may find cheaper books on Amazon.fr but with international shipping and the US to Euro exchange it comes out to be a lot cheaper).   I recently emailed them to see if they carried a few books I was looking for and did not find on their website.  They replied very quickly and were able to order most of the books.  In addition, to thank me for providing them with a list of recommended books, they gave me a lifetime coupon of 15% off!  Great customer service.  If there is a book you can't find on their website, feel free to email them and they might be able to order it for you.  They do not carry books from the publishers like  Fleurus, Hachette or Nathan, however, they can get any book from Gallimard, Bayard, Seuil, Casterman, EDL and others.

The Renaissance Child's Place Lego Camp

The Renaissance Child's Place is a Montessori school located in Fairfax that has a French immersion program for 3 - 6 years old.  They have a Lego summer camp this summer for ages 4-10.   My understanding is that all their programs (including this Lego camp) include a French immersion program geared for each child.  Check their website for more details.  You can also email them at montessorieducate@yahoo.com
